FIRST PHOTO: Henkels & McCoy Contractors apprentice lineman Allan Randall prepares to test an electric transmission line at the Auwahi Wind project on Ulupalakua Ranch land in Kanaio on Friday morning. The 21-megawatt, eight-turbine project by Sempra U.S. Gas and Power is nearing completion, with the final four turbine rotors expected to be installed in the next 10 days. Power is scheduled to be up and running in mid-December. The turbines are 428 feet tall, the largest ever installed on Maui. They are expected to generate enough energy to power 10,000 homes. The 9-mile gen-tie line, which transmits electricity generated by the wind turbines to a substation that connects to Maui Electric Co., will be completed this weekend.
