'Titanic' director James Cameron dives to Earth's deepest spot

Cameron is using a submarine to descend nearly seven miles to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. The pressure below is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Director James?Cameron?began his journey Sunday to someplace only two men have gone before ? to the Earth's deepest point.

The director of "Titanic," ''Avatar" and other films is using a specially designed submarine to descend nearly seven miles (11 kilometers) to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, an area 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

He began the dive at approximately 5:15 a.m. Monday, local time, according to Stephanie Montgomery of the National Geographic Society, where?Cameron?is an explorer-in-residence.

"RELEASE, RELEASE, RELEASE!" were the last words?Cameron?uttered before beginning the dive, according to a Twitter post from the expedition.

The scale of the trench is hard to grasp ? it's 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) deeper than Mount Everest is tall. It was expected to take?Cameron?90 minutes to reach the bottom aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub called "Deepsea Challenger." Once there,?Cameron?planned to spend six hours collecting samples for biologists and geologists to study. The return trip to the surface was forecast to take 70 minutes.

There's considerable wiggle room built in, however, as the submarine?Cameron?helped design has the capability to support life for a 56-hour dive.

The first and only time anyone dove to these depths was in 1960. Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and US Navy Capt. Don Walsh took nearly five hours to reach the bottom and stayed just 20 minutes. They didn't have much to report on what they saw there, however, because their submarine kicked up so much sand from the ocean floor they couldn't see much.

One of the risks of a dive so deep is extreme water pressure. At 6.8 miles (10.9 kilometers) below the surface, the pressure is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Cameron?told The Associated Press in an interview after a 5.1 mile (8.2 kilometer)-deep practice run near Papua New Guinea earlier this month that the pressure "is in the back of your mind." The submarine would implode in an instant if it leaked, he said.

But while he was a little apprehensive beforehand, he wasn't scared or nervous while underwater.

"When you are actually on the dive you have to trust the engineering was done right," he said.

The latest dive site, which is at the deepest point in the Mariana Trench, is named Challenger Deep after the British naval vessel HMS Challenger that used sound to first measure its depth.

The film director has been an oceanography enthusiast since childhood and has made 72 deep-sea submersible dives. Thirty-three of those dives have been to the wreckage of the Titanic, the subject of his 1997 hit film that is being released in a 3-D version next month.

Radio's 'This American Life' retracts Apple story

In this undated image released by The Public Theater, Mike Daisey is shown in a scene from "The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," in New York. Daisey, whose latest show has been being credited with sparking probes into how Apple's high-tech devices are made, is finding himself under fire for distorting the truth. The public radio show ?This American Life? retracted a story Friday, March 16, 2012, that it broadcast in January about what Daisey said he saw while visiting a factory in China where iPads and iPhones are made. CHICAGO (AP) ? The public radio program "This American Life" on Friday retracted a story about what a monologist said he found while investigating Apple operations in China, citing "numerous fabrications."

The show's Friday broadcast will detail inconsistencies in the highly popular Jan. 6 episode that was an excerpt from writer Mike Daisey's critically acclaimed one-man show "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," which currently is at the Public Theater in New York.

"We're retracting the story because we can't vouch for its truth," Ira Glass, host of "This American Life," said in a letter posted on the show's website. Spokeswoman Emily Condon said Glass wouldn't take calls for comment until after Friday's episode airs.

In his program, Daisey describes meeting workers who put in very long hours and were forced to do crippling, repetitive motions at factories that make Apple products in China.

But "This American Life" says Rob Schmitz, a China correspondent for the public radio show "Marketplace," located and interviewed Daisey's Chinese interpreter, who disputed much of the artist's claims.

"This American Life" said in its statement that staffers asked Daisey for his interpreter's contact information while fact-checking the story and he said the cellphone number he had for her didn't work anymore and he had no way to reach her.

"At that point, we should've killed the story," Glass said in the statement. "But other things Daisey told us about Apple's operations in China checked out, and we saw no reason to doubt him."

Daisey posted on his web site Friday that he stands by his work and that what he does is theater, not journalism.

"'This American Life' is essentially a journalistic ? not a theatrical ? enterprise, and as such it operates under a different set of rules and expectations. But this is my only regret," Daisey's letter said.

Apple has been rebutting Daisey's allegations for months, to little effect. An Apple spokeswoman declined comment Friday.

The original episode, "Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory," has become the most popular podcast in the history of "This American Life" with nearly 890,000 downloads.

In his show, Daisey splices career milestones of Steve Jobs and the transformation of Apple from a David into a Goliath with more personal stories about his own connection to the computer maker.

He has said that when he saw four photos posted online taken by workers at a Chinese factory to test the iPhone but mistakenly not erased, he suddenly realized people, not robots, were putting the sleek devices together.

In interviews and on stage, Daisey has said he traveled to the Chinese industrial zone of Shenzhen and interviewed hundreds of workers from Foxconn Technology Group, the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer.

"I talk to people whose joints in their hands have disintegrated from working on the line, doing the same motion hundreds and hundreds of thousands of times. It's like carpal tunnel on a scale we can scarcely imagine," he said while performing the show in New York in October.

While the piece specifically targets Apple, most of what Daisey said he discovered is applicable to many high-tech manufacturers. Daisey has performed the new monologue for some 50,000 people from Seattle to Washington, D.C., and it is now at The Public Theater until Sunday. Daisey was expected to take the show on tour, but its future is now in doubt.

In a statement, The Public Theater said the show would be performed in New York as scheduled and stood by what it called "a powerful work of art."

"Mike is an artist, not a journalist," the statement said. "Nevertheless, we wish he had been more precise with us and our audiences about what was and wasn't his personal experience in the piece."

It's called Instant Local Traffic.

Instant Local Traffic - affiliate link

I've written a detailed review of it at Instant Local Traffic Review

If you watch the sales promotion video and read my review, you'll see that there is a mismatch between the way the course is promoted and the course itself.

Don't worry. It does what it says but the sales video is very much pitched at helping local Internet marketers get more clients using a special Cheese and Whiskers marketing technique.

Whatever your business, this is a great marketing lesson which will make you think about how strong you come on during your marketing and sales process.

At its core, Instant local traffic is a PPC course for local marketers which looks at how local businesses can use pay per click advertising and especially Google Adwords to atttract local businesses.

It's been designed to help local marketing consultants to have the knowledge to help small businesses to use PPC profitably. It's therefore also suitable for small businesses who want to manage their own PPC campaigns.

Not all the modules will be relevant but the core of the training will be.?

Australia's FM says misunderstood on PNG furore

Australia's new Foreign Minister Bob Carr has backed away from comments that Canberra would impose sanctions on Papua New Guinea if it did not go to the polls, saying he was misunderstood.

Carr, who became the country's top diplomat this week, sparked condemnation from Port Moresby after he said Australia would "be in the position of having to consider sanctions" if Papua New Guinea failed to hold elections in mid-2012.

"We'd have no alternative but to organise the world to condemn and isolate Papua New Guinea," Carr told Sky News on Wednesday.

He also said Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill "must commit unequivocally to this election", adding that "without it, you've got a shocking model of misgovernance that is there planted in the Pacific".

But Carr issued a statement Friday saying Australia accepted assurances from O'Neill and others that impoverished Papua New Guinea's elections would be held on time.

He said he had spoken to his counterpart Ano Pala, who had reportedly called for a public apology over the remarks.

"As I said to Foreign Minister Pala in my telephone conversation yesterday, my recent comments have been misunderstood and used out of context," Carr said.

"Australia's approach to PNG as a sovereign friend and neighbour is to be supportive."

Politics in Papua New Guinea have been in turmoil since late 2011 when the Supreme Court ruled O'Neill's rise to power -- via a parliamentary vote while then leader Sir Michael Somare was recovering from illness in Singapore -- was illegal.

Somare, who has dominated politics in his country for decades, believes he is still the leader of the Pacific nation of 6.6 million people, which is on the cusp of a major resources boom.

O'Neill, who has the support of parliament, has vowed to hold free and fair elections in June but is facing calls from within his government to delay the polls to allow more time to implement policies and finalise voter rolls.

Carr said Australia would assist with electoral experts as well as aviation support, including to transport personnel, ballot boxes and election materials to remote areas.

"PNG is a robust democracy with a proud history of holding elections as provided for under its constitution," he said.

The Philippine Construction Industry ? Building Towards A Steady ...

The building and construction industry is one of the fastest growing business sectors in Philippines. However, much like any other developing nation, the performance of this industry in Philippines too has largely depended on the international economic scenario. For example, during the global recessionary conditions that prevailed in 2009, the overall growth rate in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell to 1.1%. That, in turn, considerably slowed down the progress of the national building and construction sector as well. Over the years, informative and popular trade shows like Worldbex have been instrumental in showcasing all topical information and market trends related to the Philippine construction industry.

?

The importance of the construction sector in the national economy can easily be gauged from the fact that, since 2006, its share in the total GDP figures has been on a continuous upward trend. With the markets starting to recover after the global downturn, the investments in this sector have also increased manifold, thereby providing further thrust to the development of the building and construction industry. At Worldbex 2012, eminent trade personalities from this sector will be on hand to acquaint participants with the latest business opportunities and investment avenues in this industry.

The building and construction industry also occupies an extremely important position as far as employment and job-creation figures are concerned. As things stand now, this sector employs more than 2 million workers, thereby absorbing well over 5% of the total available manpower in the country. A visit to the Worldbex trade show would be instrumental for visitors to learn more about profitable career opportunities in this sector. The domestic law and order situation also has a critical role to play in the development of the construction industry. All the latest information pertaining to this sector would be available at the Worldbex 2012 event. As in any other country, in Philippines too, a wide range of products are required for construction activities. Some of the key elements that are required by the professionals involved in this sector are cement, cooling and heating tools, industrial paints, IT equipments and safety gears. At Worldbex 2012, interested individuals can learn more about all the products that are necessary for the proper functioning of this sector. With growing environmental concerns all across the world, the concept of eco-friendly, ?green? buildings has also started to take root in the construction industry. Updated and efficient building creation techniques would also be displayed at the Worldbex show.

The prices of construction materials are also seen to be moving upwards since the last few years. This has primarily been due to the rise in the price levels of such key construction components like electrical appliances and plumbing tools. An in-depth insight into the price-movements of construction materials in the global economy can be obtained by attending professionally organized trade shows related to this industry, like Worldbex.

While the Philippine National Construction Corporation is the largest construction company in Philippines, several other domestic corporate houses are also coming forth to join this sector. This has been rendered possible by the overall systematic nature and professionalism with which all building and construction activities are carried out in the country. Visitors at the Worldbex 2012 event would be able to get a clear idea regarding the key players in the Philippine construction industry as of now.

The Philippine construction industry, barring the years of global recession, has been an extremely critical component of the national economy of the country. With favorable conditions in place and more investments flowing in, this sector looks all set to assume an even more important role in the years to come.

Refinance Help for Underwater Mortgages is here - Real Estate Blog ...

Brought to you by our friend Shashank Shekhar:

What is HARP and what is different about HARP 2.0?

First established in 2009, HARP (Home Affordable Refinance Program) was initiated as an option for underwater homeowners wanting to refinance their mortgage at lower interest rates with government expectations that it would assist millions of homeowners who found themselves owing more on their mortgages than what their homes were worth.

Up until now, HARP has fallen short of these expectations ? prompting the government to relax eligibility requirements in an effort to help more people stave off foreclosure.

Billed as HARP 2.0, the government has extended the program until December 31, 2013 and set out new guidelines for those wishing to apply. One of the biggest criticisms of the original plan was that in order to qualify, homeowner?s loan-to-value ratio was required to be less than 125%, automatically ruling out millions whose home value fell below that figure. This requirement has now been relaxed with HARP 2.0, which stipulates that the property only has to be valued at less than the mortgage in order for homeowners to qualify.

How do I qualify?

  • Your Loan must be Owned or Serviced by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Click here to find out
  • Your loan must have closed before May 2009.
  • You must have had no mortgage lates in last 6 months and no more than one 30 day late in 7-12 months immediately prior to the loan application date.
  • There are no specific requirements about minimum equity level in your house or documentation of Income, Assets or Employment. So you may qualify even if you are upside down on your mortgage and/or have no employment.
  • All occupancy types and almost all kinds of properties would be eligible.
  • You can get the new HARP loan even if you have a Mortgage Insurance (MI) on your current loan. However, if you do not have an MI currently, you wouldn?t be required to pay MI even though your LTV (Loan to value ratio) for the new loan would be >80%.

When will this program be available?

Though it was launched in December 2011, most of the lenders are expected to make this available on or around March 19th.

Do I have to use a Big Bank or my current Loan Servicer to avail of this program?

No you don?t have to. There are several lenders, large and small who are approved to offer this loan program. Find the one which offers competitive rates and great customer service.

Where can I find more information?

You can go to the official HARP website to get more information about this Government initiative. You can also go to a website that I created exclusively for HARP 2.0 Refinance Program. The website has a lot of FAQs, Detailed qualification guidelines and even a free eBook available for instant download.

11 dead after suicide attack on Nigerian church

A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a Catholic church in central Nigeria on Sunday, killing seven people and sparking panic in which security forces shot three others dead.

It was the second suicide attack on a church in the flashpoint central city of Jos in two weeks, after a February 26 attack claimed by Islamist sect Boko Haram killed three people and injured dozens.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan condemned Sunday's bombing and reaffirmed his government's determination "to end the spate of mindless attacks and killings".

Jos, a faultline in Nigeria's Muslim-Christian divide between north and south, was tense in the aftermath of the bombing amid fears of a reprise of deadly riots which followed last month's attack.

"There are rumours of reprisals from Christian youths, but we hope the security agents are on top of the situation as they have cordoned off the area," said Alhassan Danjuma Aliyu of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Worshippers were filing out from Sunday mass in St. Finbar's Catholic church when the suicide bomber crashed his bomb-laden car into the gate, killing seven people and leaving a dozen others dazed and injured on the ground, Plateau State government spokesman Pam Ayuba said.

Three men were then shot as security forces fired on a crowd of onlookers who gathered after the blast.

"There were 10 dead -- seven parishioners and three that were shot dead by soldiers," in a bid to disperse the crowd, Ayuba told AFP.

The bomber was also killed, "mutilated beyond recognition".

Boy scouts tried to stop the car, he said.

"The security guards, who were mainly members of the Boys Brigade, tried to prevent the car from entering the compound and in the process the car exploded."

Three people died at the scene, emergency agency spokesman Yushau Shuaib said. Several others were reported to be in a critical condition.

Emergency workers said the death toll could have been higher had the bomber managed to get the vehicle closer to his target. "The bomb exploded before he could get to the church," said Shuaib.

Peter Umoren, the parish priest at the church, told AFP seven of his parishioners were killed while 12 others were injured in the blast.

"We lost seven church members while 12 were injured and have been taken to the Plateau state specialist hospital and the airforce military hospital for treatment," he said.

He said there were a total of four suicide bombers, two in the car and two on a motorcycle escorting it, all of whom were killed. There was no immediate confirmation of his claim.

The blast blew out church windows and cracked the wall, an AFP reporter at the scene said, adding that the engine of the car was detached from its shattered body and flung into the church compound.

Jonathan called on the population "to remain patient and refrain from taking matters into their own hands through actions such as reprisal attacks, as government continues to take the battle to the merchants of terror and close in on their locations, funding and sponsors".

Rioting that followed the previous bombing killed a further three people, believed to be Muslims.

The worst recent attack on a Catholic church was on December 25, when 44 people were killed during a mass to celebrate Christmas in a town outside the capital Abuja.

Jos lies in the so-called middle belt region dividing the mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south, and hundreds of people have been killed in clashes between Muslim and Christian ethnic groups in recent years.

Violence blamed on Boko Haram, whose goals remain largely unclear, has since 2009 claimed more than 1,000 lives, including more than 300 this year, according to figures tallied by AFP and rights groups.
