HTI to report financial results Thursday - Hutchinson Leader ...

Posted: Thursday, July 26, 2012 7:41 am | Updated: 3:52 pm, Thu Jul 26, 2012.

Hutchinson Technology will report fiscal 2012 third quarter financial results on Thursday, July 26, after the close of the market. A subsequent conference call for the investment community will take place at 4 p.m.

Individual investors and news media may participate in the conference call via a webcast, which will be accessible live and on an archived basis on Hutchinson Technology's web site at www.htch.com/investors. The webcast also will be distributed by Thomson StreetEvents to both institutional and individual investors at www.earnings.com.

Earlier? this month, the company said it shipped approximately 100 million suspension assemblies during its fiscal 2012 third quarter ending June 24, compared to 96.9 million in the preceding quarter, but below its previous projection of 105 million to 115 million.

The company said its shipments of suspension assemblies during the last five weeks of its fiscal third quarter declined more than 15 percent compared to the first eight weeks of the quarter, as demand from its customers softened.

The company's average selling price declined to 58 cents from 63 cents in the fiscal 2012 second quarter and from 59 cents in the fiscal 2011 third quarter. As previously disclosed, the higher average selling price in the preceding quarter was primarily due to an increased volume of development products for new disk drive programs.

The decline in average selling price, combined with lower than expected shipments, resulted in net sales of approximately $60 million for the fiscal 2012 third quarter compared to $65.5 million in the fiscal 2012 second quarter.

The company also noted that it has resumed production at its Thailand assembly operation and has shipped suspensions from the operation for customer qualification.

Science & the Public: We?re not Weekly Reader . . .

We?re not Weekly Reader . . .

That magazine?s demise does not signal an end to kids? need for reliable news ? especially about science

Web edition : 5:57 pm

I read with sadness this week that Weekly Reader is about to disappear.

Earlier this year, Scholastic Classroom Magazines purchased the publication, one that had been an iconic source of news (throughout my elementary-school years, anyway). The buyer already had 28 subject-specific publications. It will now begin ?combining the features of Weekly Reader into the Scholastic classroom magazines,? says Cathy Lasiewicz, with Scholastic in New York City. ?There will be some co-branding,? she told me, meaning vestiges of the old publication?s name may be appended to the occasional Scholastic title.

As much as I?ll miss the idea of the venerable Weekly Reader living on, I also have to admit to a bit of a love/hate relationship with it. This conflict developed in the ?70s, shortly after I joined the staff here.

When I identified my affiliation, people frequently asked: ?Science News ? hmmm: Isn?t that the Weekly Reader of science??

Well, no. And the comparison invariably irked me, because equating a magazine designed for grade-school children with we did with seemed so wrong. The news we labored to shoehorn into print each week had been targeted to meet the needs of curious (and often quite science-literate) individuals ? adults seeking to make sense of their increasingly complex world.

No one has confused us for a kids? publication in perhaps a quarter century. But Science News recognized a need to keep kids captivated by research advances, particularly throughout that middle school window when a fascination with science and tech so often threatens to flag. The result: We launched Science News for Kids in early 2003.

It took a while for SNK to find its niche and attain some much warranted visibility. Today this online magazine reaches more than 1.3 million people annually.

But even this is not the Weekly Reader of science. Free of charge ? and free of advertising ? it now posts between 2 and 6 news and feature stories some 50 weeks a year. Each is archived for retrieval at any time from anywhere (our readers have been logging in from 200-plus countries and territories).

Most of our offerings target students in middle school, although we hear there is a significant spillover into younger and older age groups. SNK?s feature stories often introduce serious and cutting edge topics, everything from dark matter and epigenetics to fracking and electronic tattoos. We know that some appeal largely because they're?just fun or quirky, like the science of mummies, legless amphibians and creating meat in the test-tube.

But none of these stories are superficial. They don?t dumb subjects down. Instead, we just make new developments ? and the controversies that may surround them ? accessible to kids who may arrive at our site with a limited vocabulary or knowledge base.

SNK?s far shorter news stories tend to digest new developments that were recently covered in Science News. Increasingly, however, even these stories may be original to the kids? site. Among several that have proven popular: why dog?s paws don?t get frostbite, how the sun can power self-cleaning clothes and a new way to harvest energy from temperature changes.

A Cool Jobs series debuted this year. Each of the dozen stories that has begun rolling out profiles a trio of researchers that have something in common. It may be their research discipline (like robotics or math), where they conduct research (in the field) or what served as their initial motivation (something they?ve loved since childhood). The series? goal is to broaden kids? horizons on the many interesting ? and perhaps unexpected ? careers that depend on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (the STEM fields). We don?t expect kids to necessarily be looking to answer that perennial what do you want to do when you grow up question. And that?s why we?ve designed each of these pieces to sell itself on the basis of the interesting work that the profiled researchers do.

Over the past year, the site has also begun developing stories explicitly aimed at adults.

The first batch described how parents and mentors can help kids begin the research that could lead to science competitions, including those created and administered by our parent organization, Society for Science & the Public. Another thought-provoking pair of stories recently covered the integral role of creativity in science and the idea that the scientific method ? as the way that good science is conducted ? may actually constitute a myth.

Teachers have told us that they like our stories as a supplement to their required curricula (see a smattering of comments). To help others figure out how to use news, we posted a feature today in which teachers share their experiences introducing current events in the classroom, pointing to what works and what doesn?t. Among those sources that have proved useful: stories from Science News and Science News for Kids.

If you haven?t seen us, check out our site. If you are among the many returning visitors, thanks for appreciating the news that my dedicated team of writers and editors brings to kids from 9 to 99.?And if you?re a teacher or?other regular reader of Science News for Kids, please feel free to weigh in on what you like, what you don?t and what additional features or content you?d most appreciate seeing.???????????

Daniel Cormier gets Frank Mir for his final Strikeforce fight

Daniel Cormier has his final Strikeforce opponent, and its a UFC heavyweight. According to USA Today, former champion Frank Mir will fight Cormier, the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ, in a yet-to-be announced Strikeforce event in October or November. The fight will air on Showtime.

Mir's manager tweeted, "@thefrankmir just asked me to tweet for him "that he's very excited about this opportunity and is very grateful to the @ufc for making this fight happen."

Mir last fought at UFC 146, where he was knocked out by Junior dos Santos in the second round of a championship bout. Before the loss to JDS, Mir had wins over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Roy Nelson and Mirko Filipovic.

The match-up is an interesting one for Mir to take, as he has had difficulty with wrestlers in the past. Of the three losses in his last 10 fights, two came to fighters with significant wrestling backgrounds. Cormier is a two-time Olympic wrestler.

He was the surprise winner of the grand prix that started with Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem as the favorites. He beat Antonio Silva and Josh Barnett on the way to the championship. His record now stands at 10-0. After this bout, Cormier is expected to join the UFC, like every other heavyweight on the Strikeforce roster.

Who will take this bout? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Trustees: Sanctions better than football ban

Penn State's trustees may not like the NCAA's unprecedented sanctions against the university's football program, but they say the alternative ? the so-called "death penalty" ? would have been worse.

In their first joint statement since Penn State was hit with a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl game ban, reduced football scholarships and the forfeiture of 112 wins, trustees said Wednesday the NCAA punishment was "unfortunate" and "difficult."

University spokesman David La Torre said the potential for a four-year ban on playing football was floated during discussions between Penn State President Rodney Erickson and NCAA officials.

The trustees met with Erickson on the subject at a State College hotel Wednesday and afterward issued their statement.

The penalty hasn't been used since the NCAA suspended Southern Methodist University for the 1987 season. SMU then sat out the '88 season on its own and has never fully recovered its status in college football.

Reporters were barred from the conference room where the Penn State trustees met, and trustees avoided them after the meeting broke up.

The potential for a four-year ban, first reported by ESPN, showed how high the stakes were as college sports' governing body considered how to respond to an internal school investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found former coach Joe Paterno and three other top college officials helped conceal reports that Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant coach, was abusing children.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said this week that if a total football ban had been imposed, other penalties would have accompanied it.

"If the death penalty were to be imposed, I'm quite sure that the executive committee and I ... would not have agreed to just the death penalty. It would have included other penalties as well," Emmert said as the sanctions were unveiled.

An NCAA spokeswoman declined further comment Wednesday on negotiations with Penn State.

Many alumni and some trustees were incensed over the unprecedented NCAA penalty ? which likely will cripple Penn State's football team for years to come ? and Penn State's quick acceptance of it.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday that Gov. Tom Corbett said the penalties imposed on Penn State "go well beyond" those with responsibility for the handling of the sex abuse allegations against Sandusky.

"What's important to note is the kids that are up there right now, whether they are students or the student-athletes, the members of that team or the members of any other team, had nothing to do with this. Nothing," Corbett said. "And they are the ones that, unfortunately, are bearing the brunt of this. And that's what I find difficult."

A person with knowledge of the trustees' meeting said earlier Wednesday that trustees were to discuss whether Erickson had the authority to agree to the sanctions without first getting the board's approval. The person was not authorized to discuss the meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Some trustees had expressed concern that Erickson may have violated a board rule that says the board must authorize the signing of "contracts, legal documents, and other obligations."

The board statement made no reference to the propriety of what Erickson had done, saying trustees held a discussion but did not take any votes.

"The board finds the punitive sanctions difficult and the process with the NCAA unfortunate," the statement said. "But as we understand it, the alternatives were worse as confirmed by NCAA President Mark Emmert's recent statement that Penn State was likely facing a multi-year death sentence."

La Torre said Wednesday that Erickson had authority to act without the approval of the full board.

Exxon profit jumps 49 pct, helped by asset sales

(AP) ? A jump in Exxon Mobil's net income couldn't mask nagging problems for America's largest oil company.

The company's said its second-quarter net income rose 49 percent to $15.9 billion. But most of the gain came from $7.5 billion in asset sales.

It was an otherwise challenging quarter for Exxon Mobil. The company produced less oil and natural gas, and it sold both at lower prices. Excluding the asset sales, company profit fell by 22 percent to $8.4 billion, or $1.80 per share. That was its smallest operating profit since the third quarter of 2010 and it fell far short of Wall Street expectations.

Shares rose 16 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $85.40 in premarket trading.

The big gain included the sale of Exxon's stake in its Japanese fuel and lubricants business to TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. The $3.9 billion deal, announced in January, boosted profits for Exxon's international refining and chemicals businesses in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, Exxon's core oil and natural gas production business suffered. Total production fell by 5.6 percent, when compared with the same part of 2011. And benchmark U.S. crude prices fell 8.8 percent in the period while natural gas prices dropped by 46.2 percent.

Despite the drop in commodity prices, Exxon says it will press forward with aggressive exploration plan announced earlier this year. Exxon says it will spend $37 billion per year over the next five years to find new energy sources around the world.

"Despite global economic uncertainty, we continue to invest throughout the business cycle taking a long-term view of resource development," Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson said.

Overall, Exxon Mobil's net income amounted to $3.41 per share for the April-June period. A year earlier, Exxon earned $10.7 billion, or $2.18 per share. Revenue increased during the quarter by 1.5 percent to $127.4 billion.

Lower oil and natural gas prices did help some parts of Exxon's global operation. Its refineries were able to buy oil for cheaper prices, and lower natural gas prices made it less expensive to power some of their equipment. The company also was also able to sell gasoline at higher prices in some parts of the U.S.

Exxon's U.S. downstream business, which includes refineries, increased profits by 14 percent in the period. Profits fell for its U.S. chemical manufacturing business by 21 percent.

Smaller petroleum companies also reported weaker second quarter earnings this week, mostly due to the decline in oil and natural gas prices.

Second-quarter profits declined 53 percent at Royal Dutch Shell, 27 percent at Occidental Petroleum Corp. and 33 percent at ConocoPhillips. Chevron Corp. will release its financial results on Friday, and BP will report next week.

Kingdom Hearts 3D Secret Ending - Video Games Blogger

Here?s the Kingdom Hearts 3D Secret Ending. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance spoilers ahead! Spoilers! Spoilers!

Watch the Kingdom Hearts 3D secret ending video here:

The secret ending message reads: ?The darkness awakens (shows Young Xehanort). The light in the darkness (shows Aqua). Leads to the last key (shows Kairi). Reconnect. Kingdom Hearts.?

Kingdom Hearts 3D?s secret ending shows Yen Sid talking to Mickey that (for Kingdom Hearts III) he?s planning to bring together the 7 Keyblade wielders ? these likely are Sora, Riku, Kairi, Ventus, Aqua, Ventus, Mickey, and Lea or Terra ? needed to fight the 13 Darknesses. This in order to:
A) Defend the 7 Hearts of Pure Light (the 7 Princesses),
B) To combat the new Organization XIII,
C) To prevent Xehanort from getting the 7 Pure Hearts of Light in order to complete the X-Blade and starting another Keyblade War.
That?s why Yen Sid has requested Riku bring Kairi to him, so she can be trained to wield the Keyblade she received from Riku (in Kingdom Hearts II).

To get the secret ending message you first have to finish the game on any Difficulty Mode. Then during the game?s ending credits ? while you?re controlling Sora in Drop Mode ? you must collect all the glowing golden letters in some people?s names as they fly toward you (you do this by touching them).

After completing that task successfully during the ending credits, the screen will tell you: ?Secret Message Unlocked?. Then at the end of the credits, you have to save your clear game data. Next, reload this new clear game data file and open the Main Menu, from there you can go to the ?Memoire? section. It?s there you can view the secret message. Have fun!

Thanks for the video to Hassan & for the tips to Keisuke.

What do you think the Kingdom Hearts 3D Secret Ending means for Kingdom Hearts III?

PBS says it had to move fast after Willard arrest

(AP) ? PBS President Paula Kerger said Saturday the decision to remove Fred Willard as narrator of the new public TV series "Market Warriors" had to be made quickly.

Willard's lewd conduct arrest last week prompted concern that the "unfortunate circumstances" would distract from the show that debuted last week, Kerger said.

PBS has high hopes for the new show, which is intended as a companion to its highest-rated series, "Antiques Roadshow."

Within 24 hours of his arrest, Willard was replaced by Mark Walberg, host of "Antiques Roadshow." Walberg's new voiceover was done in time for the second episode airing Monday, Kerger told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

Willard's firing took place as PBS once again confronts efforts by Republican lawmakers in Washington to cut funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides 15 percent of public TV's budget.

Best known as the announcer in the film "Best in Show," Willard was arrested Wednesday night for investigation of committing a lewd act. He was taken into custody by police doing a routine check at a Hollywood adult theater.

By midday Thursday, the 72-year-old actor was fired from "Market Warriors," produced by Boston public television station WGBH. He provided narration and was not seen on-camera.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's office determined Friday that Willard's case was eligible for a diversion program that will keep him from being formally charged with lewd conduct if he completes the required courses. Willard will pay $380 for the program.

Willard said in a video posted Thursday by celebrity website TMZ that his arrest was a misunderstanding and denied wrongdoing.

Willard was nominated four times for Emmys for guest roles on TV's "Modern Family" and "Everybody Loves Raymond." In Pixar's 2008 hit "WALL-E," he voiced the character of Shelby Forthright, the CEO of a ubiquitous big-box chain called Buy'n'Large.

In addition to "Best in Show," Willard has also appeared in other Christopher Guest mockumentary films, including "This is Spinal Tap" and "Waiting for Guffman."

Effective Strategy Of Watching Your Toddler Much More Tightly ...

A few months ago, I took my 5-year-old child to the shopping mall. It was meant to be a fast visit to get her a new pair of shoes for her aunt?s wedding but I also grabbed the opportunity to get something at the grocery store. Everything went fine until I had to place the groceries inside the trunk. I searched and she was no where in sight.

You can imagine my own worry. I yelled her name three times before she responded. It turned out that she was just talking to 2 kids in cars parked a few meters to my right. They were from her daycare class.

Right then, I wished to put her on a leash, however the next most convenient thing would be to get her an electronic one. The Child Guard Panda seemed to be perfect since I could change the signal from anywhere from six feet to thirty.

This kind of electronic child leash is a transmitter which I can attach to her wrist or even pin to her shirt. I?ve got a small receiver. In case she goes beyond the limit that I set, then my own receiver beeps to alert me that she is starting to wander off.

I don?t actually mind her wanting to explore however what I do not like is when she forgets to tell me or ask permission and just goes off to anywhere she wants to.

Her baby sitter has to be extra alert whenever they step out to play in the park throughout the afternoon. I taught the baby sitter how to operate the child security alarm that I bought and she laughed and said at how I had finally caught on.

It would look that half the parents in the park have some kind of security alarm for their youngsters.

One afternoon, I took Jen out to the play area and spotted what the sitter did. Three kids in vehicles and they all had some kind of child safety alarm on them. I reckon that, just like me, their own parents can rest a little bit easier.

Gunman kills 12 in rampage at "Batman" premiere in Colorado

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - A gunman in a gas mask and body armor opened fire at a packed midnight showing of the new "Batman" film in a Denver suburb on Friday, killing 12 people after hurling a gas canister into the crowded multiplex theater.

Armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, he wounded 59 others in the shooting rampage at a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a mall in Aurora, which turned into a chaotic scene of dead or bleeding victims, horrified screams and pleas for help, witnesses said.

Police who arrived on scene within 90 seconds of the first emergency calls quickly took suspect James Eagan Holmes, 24, into custody in a parking lot behind the cinema, where he surrendered without a fight, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.

Holmes, a graduate student who authorities said had his hair dyed red and called himself "the Joker" in a reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was due to make his first court appearance on Monday.

Police said Holmes had also booby-trapped his Aurora apartment with what appeared to be sophisticated explosives, creating a potential hazard for law enforcement and bomb squad officers who swarmed to the scene.

Authorities evacuated five nearby buildings and created a perimeter of several blocks as they planned to detonate the suspected explosives with a robot, a fire official said.

Meanwhile, police used dogs to search three buildings in a research complex at Anschutz Medical Campus at the University of Colorado at Denver where Holmes had worked. A university spokeswoman said nothing suspicious was found.

"STRAIGHT CHAOS"

Witnesses at the movie theater told of a horrific scene, with dazed victims bleeding from bullet wounds, spitting up blood and crying for help. Among those taken to hospitals as a precaution was a 3-month-old baby boy.

"I slipped on some blood and landed on a lady. I shook her and said, 'We need to go, get up,' and there was no response, so I presumed she was dead," said Tanner Coon, 17.

"I went toward the exit, waited in the exit for my friends and saw a guy with blood across his face and shoulders, and just got out of the movie theater."

Confusion reigned as shooting broke out during an action scene in the summer blockbuster. The suspect may have blended in with other moviegoers who wore costumes as heroes and villains, and some witnesses said they believed at first that his appearance was a theatrical enhancement to the film.

"It was just straight chaos," said Jennifer Seeger, 25. "Everybody was starting to scream and run at that point. He went straight from here to here with a gun in my face at that point. That rifle was in my face and I honestly didn't know what to think."

The shooting evoked memories of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, 17 miles from Aurora, where two students opened fire and killed 12 students and a teacher.

It also resonated in the U.S. presidential race. Both President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, toned down their campaigns, pulled their ads from Colorado and dedicated their scheduled events to the victims.

OBAMA REACTS

Obama, who received a briefing on the shooting, pledged federal support for the investigation in a phone call with Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates, aides said.

"My daughters go to the movies," Obama told supporters at a campaign event in Fort Myers, Florida. "What if Malia and Sasha had been at the theater as so many kids do each day?"

The gunman was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun and a Glock .40 caliber handgun, Oates said. Police found an additional Glock .40 caliber handgun in his car, parked just outside the theater's rear emergency exit, Oates said.

Holmes, who had only a speeding ticket on his police record, was dressed in black with a gas mask, ballistic helmet, vest, throat guard and crotch guard, Oates said.

The guns were legally purchased at three Colorado gun stores, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation. Investigators found a drum magazine for the assault rifle with a capacity of about 100 rounds in the theater and a large amount of ammunition in his car, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The suspect bought a ticket, entered the theater and propped open the emergency exit while he slipped out to "gear up" and return armed, the law enforcement official said.

Holmes, a University of Colorado medical student, was in the process of dropping out of a graduate program in neurosciences, the university said in a statement.

Smart and carrying himself with a swagger, he treated children kindly but had trouble finding work, people who knew him said.

Billy Kromka, who served as a research assistant alongside Holmes for a couple of months last year, said he was stunned when he saw the news.

"He basically was socially awkward but not to the degree that would warrant suspicion of mass murder or any atrocity of this magnitude," Kromka said. "I did not see any behavior he exhibited that indicated he would be capable of an atrocity of a magnitude like this."

HAIR DYED RED

But New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said he "clearly looks like a deranged individual."

"He had his hair painted red, he said he was The Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman," Kelly told reporters, referring to a character in the Batman comic and cinematic universe known for committing acts of random, chaotic violence.

Holmes' family issued a statement of sympathy for the victims, saying, "Our heart goes out" to their loved ones, while they also asked for privacy from the media while they "process this information."

Hours after the shooting, authorities began removing bodies of victims from the theater while the investigation continued with some 200 local police, 100 FBI investigators and 25 representatives of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on scene, officials said.

In New York, police pledged to deploy officers at all 40 theaters where "The Dark Knight Rises" was playing in part as a precaution against "copycats." Los Angeles police said they would increase patrols at screenings of the film.

The Paris movie premiere was canceled on Friday, event organizers said. Director Christopher Nolan called the shooting an "unbearably savage" event for which he expressed "profound sorrow" to the victims and their families.

Time Warner-owned Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, faced the prospect of seeing the blockbuster sink at the box offices even as the film got off to a strong start across the United States and Canada.

The film, with a budget of $250 million, opened on 4,404 screens, the second-widest release ever behind "Twilight: Eclipse," and industry analysts had said it stood a good chance of matching or beating the opening weekend box office record of $207 million set by Disney's "Avengers" in May.

People with same name as shooter hounded online

"Dearest random Facebook people who keep confusing me for a mass murderer and yet still send me Facebook requests.

"I appreciate the fact that you are trying to become better-informed about the occurrences last night in Aurora, but you have been somewhat mislead, in that I am not the man who did it."

Such were the opening lines of a post from a James Holmes of Colorado, in response to many on the social network who thought he just might be the suspected shooter.

One of the first places many turned to for information on Friday about the suspected movie-theater shooter James Holmes was Facebook, and a kind of lynch mob mentality took hold among some who wanted to track down the shooting suspect themselves.?With many Facebook?users sharing the same first and last?name ??nearly 200 appear in a simple Facebook search ?? some became victims of nasty messages and friend requests.

"James Holmes," the Facebooker from Colorado wrote, "happens to be a pretty common name, surprisingly, so try not to jump the gun."?

He added,?"I am not a 24-year-old gun-slinging killer from Aurora,?I am a 22-year-old book-slinging mass eater from Littleton," signing the post,?"A different guy named James Holmes."?

In jest or in self?defense, or perhaps both, another James Holmes put this "It wasn't me"?photo up as his Facebook?profile picture:

As for the one?James Holmes in question, he was not found on Facebook, despite a?relentless, crowd-powered hunt.?When we asked the social network on Friday,?Facebook would not confirm to NBC News whether the gunman even?had a Facebook account before the shooting.

"We are currently not aware of any associated profile of the accused shooter," said a spokesman.

That didn't stop several groups on Facebook from jumping into the conversation, and in some cases volunteering services as judge and jury.?One called "Death Penalty for James Holmes" featured some early heated?comments.

"They should put him in a room and let the relatives of his victims stone him to death!" wrote one. "Death penalty could take years and he doesn't deserve to breathe one more minute!"

"This Holmes guy should get the same treatment as everyone In that theatre! Only worse," posted another.

"I know everyone is entitled to due process, but, this is a NO BRAINER?...?why waste taxpayers money!" said another Facebook user.

There were also some fake ? and tasteless ??Facebook pages that were launched using the name James Holmes.

The hunt-him-down mentality expressed Friday is similar to other?social network "social justice" efforts that?have backfired in the past.

Last spring, film director Spike Lee apologized?to a Florida couple and agreed to pay their expenses for fleeing their home after they were harassed when Lee?retweeted an address that was described as the home of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain accused of killing Trayvon Martin.

And last year, after a Florida?jury acquitted Casey Anthony of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, another Casey Anthony ? this one, a dad from?Pennsylvania ??received?hundreds of Facebook friend requests, messages and postings, with people "making comments about the verdict; who am I to take a child?s life,? he said in an interview.

A Facebook spokesman told NBC News on Friday?that users who have such problems?can "control the visibility and availability of their?profiles using our privacy settings, and can unfriend, block and/or?report abusive content to Facebook." The spokesman?declined to comment on how many complaints it was receiving in connection with the James Holmes?same-name issue.

Iraqis flee Syria in droves by land and air

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Thousands of Iraqi nationals have fled by land and air from Syria over the last two days to escape an escalating civil war, officials said Friday, as Iraqi troops were rushed to seal the border across from a post seized by rebels. Baghdad's prime minister called for the U.N. to help protect the refugees and get them home.

Iraqi officials said about 1,000 had left in eight flights from Damascus, which in the last week has seen its heaviest fighting in Syria's 16-month uprising. Thousands more poured through a land crossing to Iraq despite the rebel takeover of one other major Syrian border post.

The U.N. refugee agency reported Friday that unknown gunmen shot dead an Iraqi refugee family of seven in their Damascus apartment. Agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said the group, including children, was found "murdered" at close range.

She said refugees living in Syria, mainly Iraqis who have been living in the Damascus suburb of Seida Zeinab, have left their homes due to the increasing violence and "targeted threats" against them.

"What the innocent Iraqis are subjected to ? killings and looting ? is similar to what was done by the terrorist groups that harmed Iraq's security during the past years," said a statement by Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki issued late Friday.

"We urge the United Nations for immediate intervention and cooperation with the Syrian authorities in order to protect the Iraqis and facilitate their return to their homeland," the statement said, without giving further details on what the U.N. should do.

More than 2,000 Iraqi troops were rushed to seal the porous desert border near the town of Qaim, the Syrian side of which has been controlled by rebels for two days, said Iraqi Army Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Dulaimi. The crossing was blocked by waist-high concrete barriers.

Some 88,000 Iraqis are registered as refugees in Syria, mostly in Damascus, along with about 8,000 refugees from other countries such as Somalia and Afghanistan.

The Iraqi government has so far run eight flights to Damascus, and by Friday morning had evacuated around 1,000 residents, said Capt. Saad al-Khafaji of the state-owned Iraqi Airways.

"We will continue the flights until there are no Iraqis left" in Syria, al-Khafaji said.

Iraq's government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh confirmed that rebels held Qaim, located in the Euphrates river valley 320 kilometers (200 miles) west of Baghdad. But he refuted earlier reports that rebels had seized all four major border posts, saying that only the one at Qaim was wrested from the Syrian regime. At the largest border crossing between the two countries at al-Walid, for example, officials said an estimated 50 buses carrying some 3,000 people had so far come through over the past day.

Mohammed Fathi, spokesman for Iraq's western Anbar province, said the Red Crescent was setting up tents and distributing medical supplies for returnees at al-Walid.

Fadhil Radhi, an Iraqi citizen who said he traveled to Baghdad via the crossing, said he and his family passed through al-Walid around midnight on after deciding that life in Syria was too dangerous. His family of five had moved to Syria in 2007 to escape violence in their home in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. They were among what the U.N. estimates was more than a million Iraqis who moved to Syria during Iraq's darkest days between 2006 and 2008.

"We decided to return to Iraq because we feared for our lives, especially after the rise in killings and assaults targeting Iraqis living in Syria," Radhi, 48, said while unloading his luggage from the bus that drove him from Damascus. He said tickets for the trip had more than tripled in price ? from $30 to $100 per person ? in the last week.

"Thank God, we have the money to pay for the trip back because I know families who are stranded in Syria because they do not have money to go back home," he added.

Anbar spokesman Fathi said the province had received an estimated 2,000 pleas for help from Iraqis living in Damascus who cannot reach the airport because of the fighting.

At Qaim, an Associated Press photographer witnessed civilians looting the Syrian side of the border crossing, hauling away tables and chairs. A black plume of smoke could be seen over the compound.

Brig. Gen. Al-Dulaimi said there appeared to be no Syrian forces between the border at Qaim and the nearest Syrian city, Dair al-Zawr, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) away. The area is traditionally controlled by Sunni tribes.

Another band of rebels had attacked a Syrian military outpost near the Iraqi border in the remote Sinjar mountain range on Thursday, killing 21 soldiers in a grisly onslaught, al-Dulaimi said. "They slaughtered them in a very bad way," al-Dabbagh said, without providing other details.

Personal Quotes:
All the great novels, all the great films, all the great dramas are fictions that actually tell us the truth about us or about human nature or about human situations without being tied into the minutia of documentary events. Otherwise we might as well just make documentaries.
Surely the job of fiction is to actually tell the truth. It?s a paradox that?s at the heart of any kind of storytelling.
I?d always liked the idea that drama acts at its best as a kind of arena for debate. Not just about the thing itself, but also producing aesthetic, stylistic, political and moral discussions.
